What is Haute Couture?

August 31, 2014 - -

Haute Couture literally means “high fashion”, and began in the days of Louis XIV of France in the 18th century.

Today, Haute Couture has evolved to the Chambre Syndicale De La Couture; a regulating commission that establishes strict standards of what constitutes Haute Couture. There are only 100 members of the “syndicale” and only a dozen true grand couturiers in France — names like Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, and Gaultier. Haute Couture gowns from these houses might start at £50,000.
